07/23/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Runs were hard to come by for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Thursday's opener of a four-game series versus the hosting Texas Rangers. They'll need a quick fix tonight, given Joe Saunders' career-long struggles against Texas.
The Angels, who are expected to debut new infielder Alberto Callaspo, will try to avoid falling further behind first-place Texas this evening in Arlington.
Last night's opener was no easy task for the Angels, who had to face new Rangers ace Cliff Lee, making his third start for Texas since being acquired from Seattle. Lee picked up his first victory since the trade after holding the Angels to pair of runs on five hits over 8 1/3 innings of a 3-2 Texas win. Neftali Feliz recorded the final two outs for his 26th save.
"Any time you get that deep into the game and give the team a chance, you have to feel good about it," said Lee.
Texas went ahead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, getting an RBI double from Josh Hamilton, who later scored on Bengie Molina's sacrifice fly. Michael Young also homered in the win for the Rangers, who have won four of five and six of eight to push their advantage over the second-place Angels to six games in the American League West.
Angels starter Jered Weaver was solid in the loss, getting charged with three runs over six innings. Mike Napoli homered in defeat for Los Angeles, which has lost two straight and three of four.
"That's what it's all about. Going up against the best," said Weaver. "Tip your cap."
The Angels made a deal before last night's game, shipping pitchers Sean O'Sullivan and Will Smith to the Royals for Callaspo. The 27-year-old infielder is expected to join the club today and should see the majority of his playing time at third base after hitting .275 with eight homers and 43 RBI this year with Kansas City.
Callaspo will try to lend his new teammate some support as Saunders looks for his first victory in four starts. Saunders is 0-1 over his last three outings and is coming off a no-decision versus the Mariners on Saturday. The left- hander gave up five runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings of work and is 6-9 with a 4.83 ERA this season.
Saunders has yet to face the Rangers this year, but went 0-3 with a 16.88 ERA in three starts versus them last year, yielding 20 runs over 10 2/3 innings. Lifetime against Texas, the 29-year-old is 3-6 with a 7.19 ERA.
Rangers' starter C.J. Wilson seeks a second straight winning start after besting Boston on Sunday with 6 2/3 innings of one-run, three-hit ball while also striking out 10 in the outing. The 29-year-old southpaw improved to 8-5 with a 3.23 ERA this year and is 6-2 with a 3.54 ERA in 11 starts at home.
Wilson, who has allowed more than two earned runs just once in his last eight starts, is 0-1 in two starts versus the Angels this year and 1-3 with five saves and a 5.27 ERA in 30 lifetime outings against Anaheim, three of those starts.
Texas owns a 4-2 edge thus far in this year's season series and swept a two- game set from the Angels in Arlington back in May. Anaheim has lost in nine of 12 visits to Rangers Ballpark since the start of last season.

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds
With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season. What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season. Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all. Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13). Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two. Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury. Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven. Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury. Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.
In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons. Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4. Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1). The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this. No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
